Job Description:

Sr. Design Engineer (FAA DER)

Scope of Responsibility:

  • This position will begin as a Sr. Design Engineer and transition to be become a company FAA Designated Engineering Representative (DER).
  • Training to become a DER will be coordinated and overseen by EXTEX’s current FAA DER.
  • This position will require a strong technical engineering background as well as a strong ability to effectively communicate internally and across organizations (EXTEX, FAA, EASA, third party labs, etc).
  • A FAA DER must have a strong ability to make sound and efficient technical decisions independently.
  • Effectively project manage and/or provide guidance on multiple PMA projects in parallel through all phases (design, procurement, test, certification, etc) to meet or exceed project goals, budgets, and timelines.
  • A Sr. Design Engineer who is a DER candidate is a technical knowledge leader, self-starter, organized, and capable of seeing multiple projects to completion with little to no oversight.
  • Once transitioned to the DER role, this position will oversee the other Design Engineer’s projects from a technical aspect and coordinate all certification efforts internally and with FAA/EASA.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Create intellectual property (PMA’s and DER repairs) via the design and development of various aerospace parts, assemblies, and products.
  • Create, write, and review FAA reports, technical documents, and substantiation packages.
  • Create drawings and 3D models of components utilizing SolidWorks for new product development, current product improvements, and for the reverse engineering of products.
  • Apply engineering best practices and efficient project management through a systematic approach.
  • Develop and document product and process specifications for new designs.
  • Find complete and efficient solutions to both technical and regulatory challenges.
  • Maintain records required by regulatory agencies for the development of new product.
  • Verify the work of, assist, and advise technical employees and/or vendor representatives.
  • Continuous improvement of all development processes related engineering and FAA coordination.
  • Participate in development and provide technical expertise in specialty areas of projects and products.
  • Provide a high level of service to all internal and external customers. Contributes and fosters a positive teamwork environment.
  • Perform research and document findings on new technologies, processes, and materials.
  • Maintain formats of technical documents, substantiation packages, and standard processes based on policy updates and agency feedback.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education:

Bachelor’s degree required in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 12 years related experience in Engineering required.
  • Minimum of 8 years related experience in Aerospace/Aviation required.
  • Proven ability to design and engineer aircraft components and assemblies.
  • Strong engineering principles (mechanical design, materials science, coatings/platings, heat treatments, GD&T, etc).
  • Proven test certification background with the ability to design test set ups and write test procedures.
  • Experience in approving part designs and test set ups as a technical leader is highly preferred.
  • Strong understanding of engineering specifications (AMS, ASME, MIL, ASTM, etc).
  • Experience working and coordinating with large agencies (FAA, EASA, etc) preferred.
  • Working knowledge of FAA regulations for obtaining intellectual property preferred.
  • Experience working with DERs, PMAs, and DER repairs is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of 3D modeling packages (Solidworks and AutoCAD).
  • Working knowledge of inspection methods and equipment.
