Purpose

The EHS Manager – Safety Management System (SMS) is responsible for leading and managing all environmental, health, and safety functions within an FAA Part 145 repair station environment. This role oversees the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of the Safety Management System, ensuring compliance with FAA regulations while supporting safe and efficient operations. This is a hands-on role focused on real-world safety execution, incident investigation, and operational risk management. The EHS Manager works closely with technicians, leadership, and regulatory authorities to maintain a safe, compliant, and high-performing maintenance environment.


Essential Job Functions

  • Lead and manage the company’s Safety Management System (SMS) in accordance with FAA requirements and industry best practices.
  • Conduct and oversee incident and accident investigations, including root cause analysis and corrective action implementation.
  • Perform hazard identification, risk assessments, and mitigation planning for maintenance and operational activities.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for FAA and regulatory authorities on safety-related matters.
  • Ensure compliance with FAA Part 145 regulations, OSHA requirements, and environmental standards.
  • Lead internal audits, safety assessments, and compliance reviews; track findings and ensure timely closure.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain safety policies, procedures, and reporting systems.
  • Monitor safety performance metrics and identify trends, risks, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Support operational teams with practical, real-time safety guidance and solutions on the floor.
  • Promote a proactive safety culture through training, communication, and leadership engagement.
  • Coordinate reporting of safety events, incidents, and regulatory submissions as required.
  • Collaborate with Quality, Maintenance, and Operations teams to ensure alignment of safety and operational objectives.
  • Oversee environmental compliance including hazardous materials handling, waste management, and regulatory reporting.
  • Provide safety training, briefings, and awareness programs for employees.
  • Ensure proper documentation, recordkeeping, and audit readiness for all safety-related activities.


Minimum Qualifications or Experience

  • 10+ years of aviation experience, preferably in maintenance, safety, or regulatory roles.
  • Strong experience with Safety Management Systems (SMS) and FAA regulatory compliance.
  • Experience conducting incident and accident investigations and root cause analysis.
  • Practical, hands-on experience working in operational or maintenance environments.
  • Ability to work independently and drive initiatives with minimal supervision.


Preferred Qualifications or Experience

  • Experience within an FAA Part 145 repair station environment strongly preferred.
  • Experience working with Boeing and Airbus aircraft platforms.
  • Familiarity with OSHA, EPA, and environmental compliance requirements.
  • Experience leading audits, regulatory inspections, and corrective action programs.
  • Professional certifications such as CSP, ASP, or SMS-related training preferred.


Supervisory Responsibilities

This position may provide oversight or direction to safety personnel or cross-functional teams but does not require direct supervisory responsibility.

Travel

Limited travel may be required for regulatory meetings, audits, or multi-site support.

Working Conditions

  • Work is performed in both office and aircraft hangar environments.

  • Requires presence on the production floor to support real-time safety oversight.
  • Must adhere to all company safety policies and use required personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • May require extended hours in response to incidents, audits, or operational needs.
